iSAT, IODINE FUELED SPACECRAFT   While the use of iodine as an alternative to xenon has been considered for more than a decade, Busek is the first organization to operate a Hall thruster on iodine.   Busek has operated both Hall Effect thrusters and ion thrusters on iodine.  A demonstration of this alternative fuel in space is very desirable.  NASA’s Space Technology Mission Directorate approved an iodine satellite flight project for a rapid demonstration of an iodine-based Hall Effect thruster technology in a 12U configuration under the Small Spacecraft Technology Program.  Busek Co. Inc. was selected to provide a propulsion system for the small satellite.  The mission is a partnership between NASA and Busek Co, Inc., with the Air Force/SMC supporting the propulsion technology maturation.
